WPP has reinstated its Australia and New Zealand CEO role for the first time in five years, upgrading Rose Herceg's title from president to chief executive officer.

Herceg has held the president title since 2022, six months after WPP stood down former regional CEO Jens Monsees. The holding company described the change as "a title change only" when asked about structural implications.

Why it matters

Title changes at holding companies are never just title changes. WPP dissolved the ANZ CEO role in 2021 during a period of global restructuring. Bringing it back signals the region has earned its seat at the leadership table again.

For Australian agencies and marketers, this matters because WPP's local footprint is enormous. The group operates Ogilvy, VMLY&R, Wunderman Thompson, GroupM, Mindshare, MediaCom and dozens of specialist shops across Australia and New Zealand. A dedicated CEO with a direct line to global leadership means faster decision-making on investment, capability and talent for the region.

Herceg's background is worth noting. She founded social trends agency Pophouse, sold it to STW Group in 2007, then served as chief strategy officer at STW before it merged with WPP in 2016. She has both entrepreneurial and corporate holding company experience, which is an unusual combination at this level.

What to do about it

If you work with any WPP agency in Australia or New Zealand, this is a conversation worth having with your account team. Leadership changes at the holding company level tend to cascade into strategy shifts, investment priorities and capability builds within 6 to 12 months.

For competitors, watch what moves WPP makes in AI, data and commerce capability in ANZ over the next two quarters. A new CEO typically brings a mandate.
