AI Made Your Marketing Faster. It Did Not Make It Better

AI has made marketing faster without making it better, and with 43% of Australian small and medium businesses already using it, speed has stopped being an edge. When everyone generates similar content the same way, output becomes wallpaper. The advantage now sits in judgement about what is worth making.

The Take: AI did not give your marketing an edge. It gave every competitor the same one. Speed went up. Sameness went up with it. The market has quietly stopped rewarding either. The advantage was never the tool. It is knowing what is worth making.

The context: A widely shared MarTech piece this week made the case bluntly, that AI can accelerate production but cannot decide what is worth making, who it is for or how success should be measured. Faster output is not better marketing. It is just more of it, arriving at the same moment as every rival's. When the whole category ships the same competent, on-brief content at once, competent stops being enough to stand out.

The signal: Adoption in Australia is already broad. The National AI Centre found 43% of Australian small and medium businesses now use AI in some form, and 54% of those adopters lean on it for content generation. When half the market generates content the same way, output stops being a point of difference and starts being wallpaper. The tool that was meant to set you apart is the one flattening every brand towards the same middle.

Zoom out: The teams pulling ahead are not the ones producing the most. They are the ones spending the hours AI frees up on positioning, offer and customer. The tool handles the drafting. The judgement about what deserves to exist is still a human job, and it is the only part a competitor cannot copy by buying the same subscription. That judgement is where the real cost has moved, and it is the line item most teams have quietly cut.

For Australian operators: Use AI to compress production, then spend the saved hours on strategy, not on shipping more of the same. Set a quality bar the volume has to clear before it goes out. Measure marketing on outcomes and distinctiveness, not on how much you managed to publish. The speed is real. Make sure it buys you thinking time, not just a bigger pile of average.
