Australian Video Is About to Have Two Measurement Currencies. That Is Not Progress.

The Video Futures Collective has signed AudienceProject to launch an independent cross-media measurement system from early 2027, setting up a rival to OzTAM's VOZ. More measurement sounds like progress. Two competing versions of the same audience is how buyers get played.

The Take: Australian video measurement is about to have two competing currencies, and that is a problem dressed up as progress. The Video Futures Collective just signed AudienceProject to build an independent cross-media system, live from early 2027. More measurement is good. Two rival versions of the truth is how buyers get played.

The context: The VFC has partnered with AudienceProject to launch what it calls Australia's first independent cross-media audience measurement solution. Mumbrella reports the system launches in early 2027, with each platform feeding census-level impression data and AudienceProject running an opt-in panel to dedupe audiences and demographics across services. Founding members include Foxtel Media, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney, YouTube, Samsung Ads and SBS.

Between the lines: This lands while OzTAM, the incumbent behind the VOZ Total TV currency, has taken its ratings contract to tender after 25 years with Nielsen. So the market is heading toward two measurement camps at once. The broadcaster-aligned VOZ world and the streaming-led VFC one. Count the currencies. Two numbers for the same audience is not transparency. It is a negotiation weapon, and the media owner is the one holding it.

2027

The year Australia's streaming-led camp launches a cross-media measurement currency to rival OzTAM's VOZ

The precedent: Every market that fractured its measurement learned the same lesson. When buyers cannot compare reach on a single ruler, sellers quote whichever number flatters their own inventory. The whole value of a currency is that both sides submit to it. Two currencies is just two sales decks with better production values.

For Australian operators: Do not wait until 2027 to form a view. Ask every video partner which measurement they will report against and whether their reach and frequency claims are deduplicated across platforms or counted in isolation. Insist on a like-for-like comparison before you move budget on the strength of a fresh dashboard. Where two currencies disagree, treat the gap as the real question, not a rounding error. The businesses that come out ahead will be the ones who decide their own definition of a reached customer rather than accepting whichever one the seller prefers this quarter.
