Google will disable creation of new standalone Display campaigns in January 2027, pushing advertisers into Demand Gen. Manual CPC, bid adjustments and portfolio bidding do not survive the one-way move, and the Display Network is opted in by default. Australian advertisers on Display need to prepare now.
The Take: Google is quietly closing the door on standalone Display and pushing every advertiser into Demand Gen. The migration is dressed as an upgrade and reads as a loss of control. If you run Display in Australia, the clock is already on.
What breaks: In the move, manual CPC, bid adjustments and portfolio bidding do not survive. The change cannot be undone. The Google Display Network is opted in by default with no way to unselect it during migration. Google will disable creation of new standalone Display campaigns in January 2027, so this is not a suggestion you can sit out. You are trading dials for automation you cannot reverse.
Reality check: Google says advertisers adding the Display Network inside Demand Gen saw a 9.5% average lift in return, on its own internal data. Read that as a claim, not a result you have banked. The same platform that sells you the automation also grades it. This week Google also expanded Demand Gen with messaging ads on YouTube, travel tools and AI video creation, pushing the format further toward automated, creative-hungry acquisition that leans on Google to make the decisions you used to make.
Read the fine print before you migrate. Sit with that. Once you convert, manual bidding is gone and there is no path back.
When Google stops letting you build a standalone Display campaign
What to watch: Australia's internet advertising market hit $18.4 billion in 2025, with video the fastest-growing format at $5.4 billion, so Demand Gen is landing on exactly the channels where Australian spend is already moving. That is why Google wants you in it, and why the default settings favour reach over your control.
For Australian operators: Export your Display performance data before you migrate, because the move is one-way and your own history is the only benchmark you will keep. Rebuild your creative library for video and vertical formats now, since Demand Gen feeds on both and thin creative will drag your results. Choose your bidding strategy on purpose rather than accepting the automated default. Test a migrated campaign against a live one before you commit the whole account, and hold Google's ROI claim against your own numbers, not its slide.
