Shopify Just Opened Its Entire Catalogue to AI Shopping Agents. Your Product Data Is Now Your Storefront.

Shopify has launched the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard co-developed with Google to let AI agents buy from any merchant, plus an Agentic plan that opens its catalogue to non-Shopify brands. AI-attributed orders on the platform are up elevenfold year on year. The shopfront is moving from your website to your feed.

When an agent shops for your customer, it reads your product feed, not your homepage. The feed is the storefront now.

Shopify has made its biggest bet yet on AI doing the shopping. It announced the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard co-developed with Google to let AI agents find and buy products from any merchant at scale. It also released an updated Microsoft Copilot integration with embedded checkout, and opened its product catalogue to non-Shopify brands through a new Agentic plan.

The numbers behind the move are not small. Shopify says AI-attributed orders grew elevenfold from January 2025 to January 2026, and AI-driven traffic across its ecosystem is up nearly 400%. Agents are no longer a thing the platform is preparing for. They are a channel that is already converting.

The mechanics matter for every store owner. When an AI agent shops on a customer's behalf, it does not browse your hero image or read your clever copy. It reads your product feed. Title, price, availability, attributes, reviews. The feed is becoming the storefront.

Why it matters

For Australian ecommerce businesses, this changes where the work goes. A beautiful site with a thin or messy product feed will lose to an ordinary site with clean, complete, accurate data. The agent cannot be charmed. It can only be informed.

This is the same shift happening across search and shopping at once. The customer is being abstracted away and a machine is being put in their place. The businesses that win will be the ones whose data is legible to that machine.

What to do about it

Treat your product feed as a primary commercial asset, not a technical afterthought. Complete titles, accurate prices, real availability, full attributes.

Fill in the fields you have been skipping. Missing sizes, blank descriptions and absent specs are the difference between being surfaced and being skipped.

Get your reviews in order. Agents lean on ratings and review counts as trust signals when a human is not there to judge.

Watch your AI-attributed traffic and orders as a distinct line. If you cannot see it, you cannot manage it.

The storefront is moving from your website to your feed. Tidy the feed.
