Google's March 2026 core update completed on April 8 after a 12-day rollout (started March 27)
SEMrush Sensor volatility hit 9.5 out of 10 at peak
Over 55% of monitored websites experienced ranking shifts in the first two weeks
A separate spam update completed in under 20 hours on March 24-25, the shortest on record
Two algorithm updates within days of each other made this one of the most volatile periods in recent search history. If your rankings dropped, Google's standing advice is that it does not necessarily mean something is wrong with your site. Recovery often comes with future updates. But if you lost traffic to pages that were thin, duplicated or lacked original data, the signal is clear: quality thresholds are rising.
Compare your organic traffic for March 27 to April 20 against the prior period in GA4 to quantify the impact
Identify pages that lost rankings and assess whether they meet Google's helpful content criteria
Prioritise adding original data, first-party research or expert commentary to your most affected pages
Do not make panic changes. Monitor for two to four weeks before deciding on a content overhaul
