ChatGPT Owns 92% of the Traffic AI Sends You. Plan For One Door.

New data from Previsible's 2026 State of AI Discovery report shows ChatGPT carries 92.4% of trackable standalone LLM referral traffic, based on 6.77 million sessions across 166 sites. AI referrals are surging and volatile.

When one platform sends nine in ten of your AI referrals, that is not a spread of bets. That is a dependency.

New numbers put a figure on something most marketers were guessing at. ChatGPT carries 92.4% of trackable standalone large language model referral traffic, according to Previsible's 2026 State of AI Discovery report. The finding comes from 6.77 million AI-driven sessions tracked across 166 websites over 19 months, spanning SaaS, ecommerce, finance, legal, health, insurance, education and publishing.

The report makes two things clear. Google is still the centre of AI discovery, because AI Overviews and AI Mode sit inside the search results most people already use. Among the standalone chatbots that send referral traffic, ChatGPT is not just leading, it is the whole market for now. Claude is the quiet mover, growing fast in business-to-business referrals.

The traffic is also volatile. AI referrals surge and drop based on internal search behaviour, landing page fit and which model a user picks. This is not the steady drip of organic search. It moves.

Why it matters

For Australian businesses this is a concentration risk hiding as an opportunity. If AI is starting to send you visitors, most of them come from one source, and that source can change its behaviour without warning. Building for the AI channel right now means building for ChatGPT, while keeping an eye on Claude in business-to-business. The volatility also means you cannot treat AI referral like a set-and-forget line in a report. It needs watching.

What to do about it

Set up AI referral tracking in GA4 now so you can see what these platforms send you, not guess.
Check whether your key landing pages are readable and citable by AI. Clean structure and clear answers get surfaced.
Watch Claude for business-to-business. If you sell to other businesses, the second player is worth early attention.
Do not rebuild your whole strategy around one chatbot. Measure the traffic, understand it, then decide what it is worth.
Treat AI referral as volatile. Look at trends over weeks, not single days.

The AI traffic story has one dominant character today, and the smart move is to know exactly what it sends you before you spend a dollar chasing it.
