OpenAI Just Turned ChatGPT Into an Ad Channel

OpenAI has begun showing ads inside ChatGPT's free and Go tiers in India, with WPP and Omnicom as first agency partners. The answer layer millions of Australians already use is becoming a paid channel. When it reaches Australia, the organic AI recommendation becomes a slot you buy or lose.

The Take: OpenAI just turned ChatGPT into an ad channel. It started in India this week on the free and cheapest paid tiers. The reason it matters to you is not where it launched but that it launched at all. The answer layer millions of Australians now open before Google is about to carry sponsored results, and the agencies are already inside it.

What changed: OpenAI has begun showing ads to logged-in adults on ChatGPT's Free and Go tiers in India, its second-largest market. A sponsored product or service appears at the bottom of a response, labelled and visually separated from the answer itself. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users stay ad-free, so the ads land on the people who pay least or nothing. That split tells you who OpenAI thinks it can monetise, and it is the same broad free-tier audience every consumer platform ends up selling.

Follow the money: WPP and Omnicom are the first agency partners. More than 50 brands go live in the opening week. Next month OpenAI opens a self-serve ad manager at a low daily minimum of about $7.60. This is revenue diversification ahead of a planned float, not a side experiment. When the two largest agency groups on earth get first access to a new inventory source, that is the market voting on where attention is heading.

This is not a chatbot feature. It is a new media channel being built in public.

Australians on ChatGPT, the tool now being fitted with paid placements

Second order: When this reaches Australia, the AI answer that today hands out an unbranded recommendation becomes a slot you can buy or lose. ChatGPT already has around 13.8 million Australian users on Telsyte's count, and 64% of Australians have already seen an AI Overview. The zero-click answer was already taking referral visits off your site. Now it may charge the brand that used to earn that recommendation for the privilege of keeping it.

For Australian operators: Assume ChatGPT ads reach Australia within the year and decide now whether you defend the organic answer or pay for the placement. Audit how your brand and products surface inside ChatGPT and Gemini today, because that is your baseline before the money arrives. Watch the ad manager launch next month for the targeting and format detail. Treat WPP and Omnicom's early access as the tell that this scales faster than a quiet test.
