Can Pinterest turn 80 billion monthly searches into ads that sell?

Pinterest has launched Visual Search Ads, placing paid results inside image search for its 640 million monthly users. For Australian retailers with strong product imagery and a pickier peak-season shopper, it is a high-intent discovery channel worth a measured test.

The Take: Pinterest wants to sell ads against the searches people run with pictures instead of words. For Australian retailers heading into peak season with a pickier, less loyal shopper, a channel built on high intent discovery is worth a test. Meta and Google are not the only rooms in the house.

The numbers: At its advertiser summit, Pinterest launched Visual Search Ads, placing paid results inside image search and pin closeups. The platform says users run more than 80 billion searches a month, most of them visual and more than half with a commercial purpose. That is an audience already in a buying frame of mind, which is rarer and more valuable than raw reach. Pinterest also rolled out AI tools that restyle a product image into new scenes, which lowers the cost of making that creative.

640 million

Pinterest reports 640 million monthly active users, a discovery audience most Australian media plans still ignore

Who wins: Retailers with strong product imagery. Visual search rewards the brands whose photos actually show the product in use, so a fashion, homewares or beauty seller with a deep image library starts ahead. Thin catalogues built on stock photos do not. If your images are weak, fix the photography before you touch the ad account.

The trade-off: This is another channel to run, measure and feed with creative at the busiest time of the year. Beta access is rolling out across Pinterest markets in the coming weeks, so Australian advertisers can trial it, but a half-built Pinterest presence will not beat a well-run Meta campaign. Treat it as an addition to your mix, not a replacement for the platforms that already convert for you.

For Australian operators: If you sell anything visual, claim your Pinterest presence before you pay for ads on it. Load your best product photography, tag it properly and watch which images earn saves. Australian shoppers are comparing more brands and buying with less loyalty, so a channel that catches them mid-comparison earns a small, measured test budget rather than a reflex spend on the platforms you already know. Prove it works on your own numbers before you scale it.
