Shopify Merchants Can Now Sell Directly Through ChatGPT and Google AI Mode

What changed

Shopify launched Agentic Storefronts, giving merchants access to AI platforms including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and the Gemini app
Products can now be discovered, compared and purchased directly inside AI conversations without the buyer visiting a website
This creates a new commerce channel that bypasses traditional search and browsing entirely

What it means

This is the first real infrastructure for AI-native commerce. Instead of optimising for search rankings or ad placements, merchants now need their product catalogue to be readable and recommendable by AI agents. For Australian ecommerce businesses on Shopify, this opens a distribution channel that did not exist six months ago. The early movers will build presence before the channel gets crowded.

What to do

Check your Shopify plan supports Agentic Storefronts and enable the feature in your admin settings
Review your product titles, descriptions and structured data. AI agents rely on clear, factual product information to make recommendations
Ensure your pricing, shipping and return policies are machine-readable in your product feed
Monitor which products are being surfaced through AI channels using Shopify's analytics once the feature is live
