Google Search Just Hit an All-Time Usage Record. The Death of Search Was Oversold.

Google says Search hit its highest usage on record during Argentina's World Cup comeback win over Egypt. That runs against the story that AI is killing search. The lesson is not that search is safe. It is that people still search, they just search differently, and the businesses that show up in the right moments still win.

People did not stop searching. They stopped clicking through for the easy answers. Those are different problems.

Google's Nick Fox says Search saw its highest usage on record during Argentina's comeback win over Egypt at the World Cup. Millions of people, in the same moment, reaching for the same box to ask the same questions. That is worth sitting with, because the running story of the last two years has been that AI is quietly killing search.

Both things are true, and holding them together is the point. Search usage is at a record high. Search referral traffic to a lot of publishers is down. The volume is growing and the clicks are shrinking at the same time, because more of the answer now sits on the results page itself.

Why it matters

If you run an Australian business and you have been told search is dead, this is your correction. Demand is still flowing through that box in enormous volume, spiking around live moments like the World Cup, the Origin decider or a product everyone is suddenly talking about. The intent is there. What has changed is that the top of the page answers more of the simple questions before anyone reaches your site.

That shifts where the value is. The queries that still send a click are the ones where the answer is not simple. Comparisons. Specific product decisions. Local intent. The moment someone moves from browsing to buying. Those are the searches worth owning, and they are worth more now than they were when traffic was easy.

An all-time high. Google Search usage set a new record during the World Cup, even as AI answers reshape the page

What to do about it

Stop measuring search health by raw traffic alone. Measure the searches that lead to a sale, not the ones that lead to a definition.

Own the high-intent, hard-to-answer queries in your category. Those still click through.

Be present in the live moments. Attention spikes are predictable around events your customers watch. Plan for them.

Make sure an AI answer can read and cite you. If the page cannot be parsed, you are invisible in the format that now sits above the links.

Treat brand search as the asset it is. When people search your name directly, that traffic is yours and it converts.

Search is not dying. It is getting more crowded at the top and more valuable at the bottom. The businesses that panic about the headline traffic number will miss that the buying intent never left.
