OpenAI Launches Self-Serve Ads Manager with $50K Minimum Spend

OpenAI has launched a self-serve ads manager for ChatGPT, dropping the minimum spend from US$250,000 to US$50,000. For the first time, advertisers can monitor campaign performance in real time and optimise against impressions and clicks directly, without going through OpenAI or an agency intermediary.

The tool is described by early testers as serviceable and broadly similar in layout to Google Ads. It is currently available to a small subset of advertisers in pilot, but the self-serve model signals OpenAI's intent to build a scaled advertising business, not just a managed service for enterprise brands.

OpenAI projects US$2.5 billion in advertising revenue for 2026. The ads manager is the operational infrastructure required to get there. Without self-serve tooling, every advertiser needed hand-holding from OpenAI's sales team. That does not scale to thousands of advertisers.

The platform currently supports cost-per-click pricing, which replaced the original CPM model after CPMs dropped 58% in the first 10 weeks. Ads appear alongside ChatGPT answers for free-tier users in the US.

Why it matters

ChatGPT advertising has moved from experiment to operational platform. The self-serve ads manager is the infrastructure milestone that separates a pilot from a real ad business. Google Ads and Meta Ads became dominant because they democratised access. OpenAI is following the same playbook.

For Australian advertisers, the US$50K minimum is within reach for mid-market brands running serious paid media budgets. When ChatGPT ads expand to Australian audiences, the brands with accounts and campaign data already in the system will have a head start.
