Meta Says the Link in Bio Era Is Over. Every Reel Is Becoming a Storefront.

Meta is rolling out product tagging and affiliate links in Reels, letting creators tag up to 30 products per video. The company says the link in bio era is over. Social commerce is moving into the video itself, and Australia is on the expansion map.

Link in bio was a workaround that survived a decade because nothing replaced it. Meta just replaced it at the exact point of inspiration.

Meta is turning Reels into storefronts. Creators can now drop products from a business catalogue or unique affiliate links directly into their videos, tagging up to 30 products per Reel, with viewers buying without ever hunting through a bio link. Meta's head of global business group Nicola Mendelsohn put it plainly. The era of link in bio is finally over.

The rollout covers the US, Brazil, India, Indonesia and Thailand first, with expansion planned across all 22 Instagram commerce markets. Australia is one of those markets, so the countdown for local brands has started.

The mechanics matter as much as the announcement. Instagram first brought product tagging to feed posts in 2022, but Reels is where the attention lives now, and Engadget notes creators earn commissions when viewers purchase through their tags. That is a real affiliate economy stitched into the format Australians watch most.

Every step removed from a purchase journey has a measurable conversion cost. Watch a Reel, remember the brand, find the bio, click the link, find the product again. Each step leaks buyers. Tagging collapses the journey to two taps.

Why it matters

Social commerce in Australia has always underperformed its hype partly because the plumbing was terrible. Native product tags in Reels fix the plumbing exactly where discovery already happens, which makes creator content a direct sales channel rather than an awareness play with a broken checkout.

It also reshuffles creator economics. Commission-bearing tags give creators a revenue line beyond flat sponsorship fees, which will push them toward brands with tag-ready catalogues and decent margins. Brands without their product data in order will not even be taggable.

30

The number of products a creator can now tag in a single Reel, turning short video from an awareness format into a storefront.

What to do about it

Get your catalogue ready before the rollout reaches Australia. Clean product feeds in Commerce Manager, accurate pricing, stock status and imagery. Taggability is the new prerequisite for creator partnerships.

Restructure creator deals around commission plus fee. Pure flat-fee sponsorships ignore the new incentive layer. Hybrid deals align creators with sales rather than views.

Brief creators for tagged formats. Content that demonstrates products naturally outperforms content that interrupts itself to sell. The tag does the selling. The video does the wanting.

Baseline your current social conversion path now. Measure how much revenue currently survives the bio-link journey so you can quantify what native tagging changes when it arrives.

The gap between seeing something and buying it keeps shrinking, and the brands with their product data in order will be the ones standing where it closes.
