Claude Is the Fastest-Growing Way Customers Land on Your Site. It's Also the Smallest.

New data has named the fastest-growing source of AI referral traffic, and it is not the one everyone talks about. Claude sent almost four times more visitors to websites in April than it did in January, the sharpest growth of any major AI platform this year. It is also, for now, the smallest, sitting around fifth among AI traffic sources.

Both halves of that matter. Claude's share of referral traffic jumped from a tiny base, climbing 386% in four months while ChatGPT grew just over 1.5% in the same window. ChatGPT still dwarfs everyone in absolute terms, holding the overwhelming majority of AI-referred traffic. Claude is the trend line, not the volume.

The B2B picture is the loudest signal. Claude went from 1.4% to 18.5% of measurable B2B AI referrals in eight months. For businesses selling to other businesses, that is a channel forming in real time.

Why it matters

Customers are starting to arrive from places that did not send anyone a year ago. Most businesses have no idea how much of their traffic now comes from AI tools because they have never looked. You cannot manage a channel you are not measuring, and this one is growing fast enough that ignoring it has a cost.

The trap is chasing the volume and missing the trend. ChatGPT is the big number today. Claude is the steep line. The businesses that win the next wave are the ones watching where the growth is heading, not just where the traffic is now.

What to do about it

Open your analytics and find out how much traffic already comes from AI sources. If you cannot see it, that is the first job.
If you sell B2B, treat AI referral as a channel forming now, not a someday problem. The growth is happening in your patch.
Make your content genuinely useful and quotable. AI tools surface sources they can rely on, which rewards substance over keyword padding.
Watch the trend lines, not just the totals. The smallest fast-growing source today is the one you wish you had tracked early.

AI referral traffic is small, messy and growing in a hurry. The businesses measuring it now are the ones who will not be surprised when it stops being small.
