Google Just Made Customer Retention Something You Can Actually Measure

Google Ads API v25 adds loyalty campaign goals and YouTube metrics, making customer retention something you can measure and fund. Most budgets still chase the new customer while ignoring the cheaper one you already have.

Google has shipped version 25 of its Ads API, and two additions are worth your attention. It now pulls YouTube metrics into reporting, and it adds loyalty campaign goals built around retention rather than acquisition. Google is quietly telling advertisers that keeping customers is worth optimising for, not just chasing new ones.

That is a notable shift from a platform whose whole machine is tuned to acquire. Retention goals in the ad tools mean you can now point spend at the people you already have, and measure it in the same place you measure everything else.

Why it matters

Most marketing budgets are pointed the wrong way. The money chases the new customer while the existing one, cheaper to reach and more likely to buy, gets ignored. That is not a moral failing. It is just easier to measure a click than a second purchase. Tools that make retention measurable make it fundable, and fundable is what changes behaviour.

What to do about it

Look at your split. How much of your spend goes to acquisition versus keeping the customers you already paid to win? Most businesses are shocked by the answer.
Use the new loyalty goals to point some budget at repeat purchase and reactivation, then measure it properly.
Connect the YouTube metrics into your reporting so you stop judging video on vanity views and start judging it on outcomes.
Do not swing the pendulum too far. Acquisition still matters. This is about balance, not replacement.

The cheapest growth in your business is usually the customer you already have. The tools finally make that easy to prove.
