11% of Your Media Budget Vanishes Between the Dashboards

IAB Australia's latest research finds three in four marketers say their measurement is not delivering the accuracy or trust they need, and most estimate at least 11% of media budget is lost to the gap between channel reporting and real outcomes. The fix is one shared outcome every channel reports against, reconciled to the bank.

The Take: Australian marketers trust their channels one at a time and lose the plot the moment those channels have to add up. That gap is not a reporting nuisance. It is budget walking out the door while every dashboard stays green.

What changed: IAB Australia's latest measurement research, reported by B&T, found three in four marketers say their current mix of attribution, incrementality testing and marketing mix modelling is not delivering the speed, accuracy or trust they need to make confident decisions. Confidence in single channels is high. Confidence in how those channels combine into a business outcome is not. The industry now calls measurement a "critical juncture", which is a polite way of saying the tools we bought do not answer the question the business actually asks.

The shortfall: The question is simple. Did the money work. Channel-level reporting cannot answer it, because every platform scores its own contribution and none of them nets out the double counting. A sale claimed by Meta, Google and your email tool at once looks like three sales in three dashboards and one deposit in the bank. Multiply that across a full media mix and the reported picture and the real picture drift apart, quietly, month after month.

Follow the money: More than two-thirds of marketers estimate at least 11% of their media budget is lost to the lag and disconnection between measurement and real outcomes, and about a third put the figure above a quarter of spend, according to reporting on the same research. The reliability worry (34%), conflicting data (33%) and inconsistent measurement across channels (30%) all point at the same hole. No single team owns the number that ties it together.

11%

The share of media budget Australian marketers say they lose to the gap between measurement and real outcomes, on the conservative end.

For Australian operators: Pick one outcome that matters to the business. Revenue, booked jobs or qualified leads. Make every channel report against it in the same units. Stop grading channels on their own house metrics. Run one holdout test each quarter so you hold a number the platforms did not hand you. Give the shared outcome an owner, a real person who reconciles platform totals against the bank. If a channel cannot be tied to that outcome, it does not earn the next increase.
