What changed

Shopify activated Agentic Storefronts for all eligible merchants. Products are now discoverable inside ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini
The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), co-developed by Google and Shopify, now supports multi-item carts, live catalogue queries and loyalty program integration
AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores has increased 7x since January 2025, with AI-attributed orders up 11x

What it means

Product discovery is shifting from search bars to AI conversations. If you sell on Shopify, your products can now surface when someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation. No separate integration, no apps, no extra transaction fees. For Australian ecommerce businesses, this opens a channel that did not exist 12 months ago. The merchants who optimise their product data for AI readability will capture this traffic first.

What to do

Check your Shopify admin to confirm Agentic Storefronts are enabled
Clean up product titles, descriptions and structured data so AI systems can parse them accurately
Monitor your Shopify analytics for traffic attributed to AI channels
Review your product feed for completeness: images, pricing, availability and shipping details all matter for AI recommendations
