Google Wiped Reviews Off Local Listings Overnight. One Business Went From 4,651 to 63.

Google has confirmed it is investigating a bug that stripped reviews from Google Business Profiles and paused new reviews on local listings. Some businesses lost thousands of legitimate reviews overnight. Google says it will restore any removed in error.

Your review count is an asset you rent from Google, not one you own. Days like this are the reminder.

Google has confirmed it is investigating a bug that made reviews vanish from Google Business Profiles and paused the ability of some local listings to collect new ones. Business owners and local SEOs have spent days reporting the same thing. Reviews they earned over years, gone.

The scale is not small. One business owner reported dropping from roughly 4,651 legitimate reviews collected naturally over many years to just 63 within about 24 hours. Some listings lost thousands, others lost a handful, depending on how many they had to begin with. On top of the disappearances, many businesses cannot collect new reviews at all while the pause is in place.

Google's line is that its spam systems are doing the removing. A spokesperson said that when systems detect suspicious reviews, Google takes a range of actions including removing reviews and temporarily pausing reviews on the profile to prevent further abuse, and that it will restore any reviews incorrectly removed. Whether this is spammers abusing profiles or an algorithm tuned too aggressively is still unclear.

Why it matters

For an Australian local business, Google reviews are often the single biggest driver of walk-in trust. A plumber, a dentist, a cafe, a law firm, the star rating and review count do a lot of the selling before anyone picks up the phone. Lose them overnight and you lose the shopfront proof that turns a search into a customer.

This is the risk of building your reputation entirely on ground you do not control. When the platform sneezes, your credibility catches the cold, and there is no support line that fixes it on your timeline.

What to do about it

Screenshot your current reviews and counts now, across every location. If yours disappear, evidence helps when you request reinstatement.

Do not delete or re-request anything in a panic. Google has said it will restore reviews removed in error, so give the fix time before taking action that muddies the record.

Report missing reviews through the Google Business Profile help channels and the community forum. Volume of reports is what gets bugs prioritised.

Build a review base you actually own. Collect testimonials to your own site, capture them in your CRM and publish them where a Google outage cannot touch them.

Spread your proof across more than one platform. Product reviews, industry directories and social proof on your own pages all reduce single-point dependence.

Reviews you can lose in a day were never fully yours. Build the ones that are.
