The timing is hard to ignore. Google announced at I/O that it was converting its search box into a conversational AI engine. Within days, DuckDuckGo recorded its highest week of new installs in years.
U.S. DuckDuckGo app installs grew an average of 18.1% week-over-week during May 20 to 25, compared to the prior week. Growth peaked at 30.5% on May 25. On iOS, week-over-week growth averaged 33% and peaked at 69.9%. App analytics company Apptopia recorded a 29% increase in average daily downloads in the U.S. and a 12% increase globally across the same period.
DuckDuckGo's CEO Gabriel Weinberg was direct about what was driving the numbers. "Google is force-feeding AI with no way to opt out," he said. DuckDuckGo's AI-free search page, noai.duckduckgo.com, saw 22.7% week-over-week traffic growth on its own.
Why it matters
DuckDuckGo's market share remains small relative to Google. This is not a market-shift story yet. But the signal has two implications worth noting. A non-trivial share of users actively prefer organic search results over AI-mediated answers, and that preference is strong enough to make them change their default browser. Those users tend to be more technically literate and more resistant to advertising than the average Google user. That has implications for how you are reaching them.

What to do about it
If your paid search strategy relies heavily on Google, this is not a prompt to panic. DuckDuckGo's market share is not large enough to force a material budget reallocation today. It is a prompt to monitor the trend and to ensure your organic content strategy is not built solely around Google AI citation. Users who move to alternative search engines are typically higher intent and lower funnel. If DuckDuckGo's growth continues, brands with content optimised for traditional index-based search results will be better positioned.
