Google Started Paying for the Web on a Meter Only Google Can Read

Google has begun paying select publishers when their content shapes an AI answer, metered inside Search Console with no upfront fee. It sets the price of web content on Google's own meter, and any Australian business reliant on organic is now a content supplier.

The Take: Google has started paying some publishers when their content shapes an AI answer, and that is not a peace offering. It is Google setting the price of the web's content itself, on its own meter, inside Search Console. Treat it as the moment the value of your words moved from the click to the contribution, priced by the company that reads the meter.

The mechanics: Search Engine Land reports Google is piloting a Search Console feature called AI Contribution that pays a limited set of publishers when their content contributes significantly to an answer in AI Mode, AI Overviews or Gemini. Search Engine Journal notes there is no upfront licence fee. Publishers see a monthly earnings figure and can opt out at any time. Payment is tied to the generation phase, the point where your words shape what the answer says, not to a click that may never arrive.

Follow the money: This is not the fixed licensing cheque some AI firms have written to news groups. It is usage-based and metered by Google, and Search Engine Roundtable points out Google has not disclosed how each payout is calculated. The party that decides when your content contributed is the same party writing the cheque and counting the uses.

The local angle: Australia has fought a version of this before. The ACCC-designed News Media Bargaining Code forced platforms to pay news publishers, and the lesson was blunt: a platform will always prefer a meter it controls to a price it has to negotiate. Any Australian business that lives on Google organic traffic is now a content supplier to a machine that decides what the supply was worth.

For Australian operators: Act like a supplier, not a victim. Keep publishing the specific, first-hand material that models actually pull into answers, because generic content earns nothing on this meter and ranks for nothing either. Watch Search Console for the AI Contribution panel and read what Google says qualifies before you opt in to anything. Most of all, build the owned channels that do not route your audience through a meter someone else reads: email, direct traffic and a reason to come back. Price your best material accordingly, because if Google now pays for content that shapes answers, that is a signal about what that content is worth holding back.
