Google just pushed five updates to AI Mode and AI Overviews that change how search results surface content. The biggest shift: AI responses now pull in quotes from Reddit, forums and social communities, displayed with creator handles and community names under a "Personal Perspectives" label.

The update also introduces subscription labelling. If a user pays for a news outlet, links from that publisher now carry a "Subscribed" badge inside AI responses. Google says early testing showed users were "significantly more likely" to click on labelled links compared to unlabelled ones.

Three other changes round out the update. Inline links now appear next to specific claims in AI responses, not just at the bottom. Desktop users see website previews on hover. Navigation suggestions at the end of AI responses guide users deeper into the web after their initial query.

Why it matters

For Australian marketers, these changes signal a meaningful shift in how AI search treats original content. Community-sourced perspectives from Reddit and forums now sit alongside authoritative sources in AI responses. That is a double-edged sword. Brands with active community presence get more visibility. Brands that have ignored community engagement lose ground to user-generated opinions they cannot control.

The subscription labelling is arguably more consequential. It creates a measurable advantage for publishers with paying subscribers. If your content sits behind a paywall and your readers subscribe, Google will now highlight your links in AI responses. That is a direct incentive to build subscription relationships.

But the "Expert Advice" labelling of Reddit posts has drawn criticism. Spammers have been exploiting Reddit's search visibility for months. Not every forum post comes from a genuine user, let alone an expert.

What to do about it

Audit your Reddit and forum presence. If your brand or product gets discussed on Reddit, you need to know what is being said. Those conversations now appear in AI search results.
Build a community engagement strategy. Brands with authentic community participation get surfaced. Brands without it get represented by whoever happens to be talking about them.
Consider subscription models for content. The subscription label creates a click-through advantage. If you publish valuable content, a paywall with Google subscription integration now has a search benefit.
Monitor AI Overviews for your target queries. Check what community perspectives Google surfaces for your key terms. Negative or misleading Reddit threads will now appear in AI responses.

Google is no longer treating AI search as a closed loop. It is actively building bridges back to the web, but the bridges favour publishers and communities that have built trust with their audiences.
