OpenAI has licensed Yelp's 330 million reviews and ratings into ChatGPT. AI assistants borrow trust from third-party review platforms, which makes your ratings a direct input to the answers customers get.
OpenAI has done a deal with Yelp. From this week, ChatGPT can pull Yelp's reviews, ratings, photos and business details straight into its answers, and it can fire off a "Request a Quote" to a local business on your behalf. Yelp's branding and links come along for the ride, though OpenAI controls how that looks.
Yelp is not small. It sits on 330 million cumulative reviews across 8.4 million business pages. That is a serious pile of local reputation data now feeding the tool a growing number of people ask before they buy anything near them.
Why it matters
This is the pattern, and it is worth naming. AI assistants do not generate trust. They borrow it. ChatGPT cannot vouch for your business, so it reaches for a source that can, and increasingly that source is a third-party review platform. Your rating on those platforms is no longer just a review page. It is training material for the answer a customer gets before they ever see your website.
For Australian businesses, Yelp is weaker than Google here, but the mechanism is identical. Whatever review platform holds your reputation is now a pipe into AI answers. If that data is thin or negative, the AI carries it forward.

What to do about it
You cannot control what ChatGPT says about you. You can control the data it is reading.
