Google Just Made AI the Front Door of Search. Australian SEO Built for Ten Blue Links Is Done.

Google rebuilt its Search box at I/O 2026 and made AI Mode the default for everyone globally. Gemini 3.5 Flash now powers Search. Australian SEO strategies built for ten-blue-links rankings need to shift to citation share.

The search box is no longer a search box. It is a prompt window that occasionally retrieves a website.

Google rebuilt the Search box at I/O 2026. It is the biggest change to the most-used surface on the internet in 25 years. The new box anticipates user intent, expands dynamically for longer prompts and routes everything through Gemini 3.5 Flash by default.

Two changes matter most for SEO. First, AI Mode is now the default for everyone, globally. The blue-links experience still exists but as a fallback. Second, Search builds generative UI on the fly. Tables, graphs, interactive simulations and custom layouts get assembled in real time based on the query.

Liz Reid, who runs Search at Google, framed the shift as a move from search to dialogue. The system still surfaces classic results when the query calls for them. The difference is that the AI layer now decides.

Australian operators have spent two decades building organic strategies for ten-blue-link SERPs. That world is gone. The same content can now appear inside an AI summary, inside a custom-generated comparison table or behind a "Show sources" toggle that most users never click.

Why it matters

Click-through rate on traditional organic listings has been compressing for two years. AI Mode default-on accelerates the drop. The brands that get cited inside the AI response keep visibility. The brands that rank tenth get nothing.

The mechanics of citation are also different. AI Mode reasons over multiple sources, builds a synthesis and surfaces brand mentions inside that synthesis. The ranking signal moves from position one in a results page to citation share in a generated response.

63%

Of all AI citations across major LLMs point to listicles, per Evertune's review of 25,000 cited URLs. The format that wins citations is not the format most brands have invested in.

What to do about it

Audit your top 20 organic landing pages for AI citation suitability. Clear headings, comparative content, scannable structure and named entities matter more than keyword density.
Track AI Mode citations directly. Microsoft Clarity, GA4 referrer changes and dedicated AI visibility platforms like Evertune or Profound now give you signal here.
Build content where the title is a question and the page answers it inside the first 200 words. Reasoning-heavy AI queries reward early-funnel visibility.
Move resources from broad informational keywords to commercial intent queries. Informational click volume is collapsing first.
Refresh your brand entity signals on third-party sources. AI models cite Reddit, G2, MarketWatch and editorial coverage before they cite owned content.

The search bar still looks the same on screen. Behind it, the entire ranking system has changed.
