Google is rolling out a Pinterest-style redesign of Google Images with a personalised For You gallery, plus AI image generation inside AI Overviews. Visual search is shifting from lookup to discovery, and product content needs to keep up.
A search box waits for intent. A feed manufactures it. Google Images just switched sides.
Google is rebuilding Google Images for its 25th anniversary, and the new version looks a lot more like Pinterest than a search engine. TechCrunch reports users will land on a For You gallery of images tailored to their interests and browsing history, populated before they type anything at all.
At the same time, Google is adding AI image generation to AI Overviews. Ask a visual question and the answer can now be a generated image rather than a photo pulled from a website. Both changes start rolling out over the coming weeks.
Put those two moves together and the direction is clear. Google Images is shifting from a lookup tool, where users hunt for a specific picture on a specific site, to a discovery feed, where the surface itself decides what you see.
Ars Technica notes the gallery updates continuously based on what Google infers about your interests. That is the Discover playbook applied to images, and Discover has become a serious traffic source for publishers who learned to feed it.
Why it matters
Visual discovery is where high-consideration retail categories get shortlisted. Fashion, homewares, travel, food and renovation decisions all start with images long before they become a keyword. If Google is building a taste graph for every user, appearing in that graph is the new page one.
Generated images inside AI Overviews cut the other way. Some share of visual queries that used to send a click to a website will now be answered with an image Google made itself. Informational image traffic follows informational text traffic down the same slope.
Google Images launched in 2001 to handle searches for Jennifer Lopez's Versace dress. A quarter century later it is becoming a personalised discovery feed with AI-generated answers.
What to do about it
Audit your image inventory like it is a channel. Unique, high-quality and properly marked-up product and project imagery is what feeds discovery surfaces. Stock photos feed nothing.
Tighten image SEO fundamentals. Descriptive file names, alt text, image sitemaps and product structured data are how Google connects your pictures to interests and intent. Most Australian retail sites still skip half of this.
Publish images that answer questions AI will not generate well. Real installs, real before-and-afters, real people using real products. Authenticity is the moat against generated filler.
Watch your Search Console image performance monthly. If image impressions climb while clicks flatten, the feed is showing you but the generated layer is answering, and your creative needs to earn the tap harder.
The search box built the last 25 years of image traffic. The feed will decide the next 25.
