Apple Maps Ads Are Coming, and Tradies Are Banned. Google Local Services Just Got Safer.

Apple has published its Maps ads policy and it bans home services like plumbing and electrical, plus crypto ATMs and bail bonds. Apple is starting narrow with places customers visit. For trades, Google Local Services Ads stay the game.

Apple is starting where the customer walks in the door. If your customer only ever calls you, Apple Maps ads are not built for you yet.

Apple has published the advertising policy for its upcoming Maps ads, and the exclusions say a lot about where it is starting. Home services are banned, the whole category, plumbing, electrical, locksmiths, HVAC, pest control, roofing and general contracting. Crypto ATMs and bail bonds are out too. Medical services will be judged case by case. Political ads, weapons and the usual prohibited categories are gone.

The logic is clear when you look at what is left. Apple appears to be limiting its first wave of Maps ads to businesses with a physical place customers actually visit, a cafe, a shop, a showroom. A plumber does not fit that model, because the customer never comes to the plumber.

This is a real difference from Google. Local Services Ads are one of Google's biggest local categories, and home services are the heart of them. Apple is deliberately not competing there at launch.

Why it matters

For Australian trades and home-service businesses, the short version is that your local ad game does not change yet. Google Local Services Ads remain the channel where customers with a flooding bathroom find you, because the decision cycle there is short and the intent is urgent. For bricks-and-mortar businesses, cafes, retailers, showrooms, a new ad surface is coming to a Maps app millions of Australians already use to decide where to go. Worth watching, not yet worth building around.

What to do about it

Trades and home services, hold your line. Google Local Services Ads and reviews are still where urgent local demand finds you.

Bricks-and-mortar businesses, get your Apple listing right now. Accurate hours, location and photos are the free groundwork before any ad surface arrives.

Do not chase the new surface for its own sake. A channel is only worth it if your customer actually uses it to decide.

Keep your reviews strong everywhere. Whatever the platform, the business with the credible reputation wins the local pick.

Apple Maps ads will matter for some Australian businesses and not others. Know which one you are before you spend a dollar on it.
