AI Got Cheap. Your Excuse for Ignoring It Just Expired.

AI model prices are falling fast, which means the cost of running AI inside your business keeps dropping while capability climbs. The barrier was never really the price, it was knowing what to do with it, and that gap is now about skill not budget.

The excuse that AI is too expensive to bother with is expiring. The tools got cheap. The thinking has to catch up.

The price of AI models is falling fast, and it is falling at an awkward moment for the big American labs racing to justify their spending. For marketers, cheaper models mean the cost of running AI inside your business keeps dropping, while the capability you get for each dollar keeps climbing.

The pattern has held for a while. A given level of AI performance costs a fraction of what it did a year ago. What was expensive enough to ration is becoming cheap enough to build into everyday work, from content drafts to data analysis to customer support.

Why it matters

For Australian businesses, falling model prices remove the last easy reason to sit out. The barrier was never really the cost of the model. It was knowing what to do with it. As prices drop, the gap between businesses that use AI well and those that do not stops being about budget and starts being about skill.

That is the real divide forming. When the tool costs almost nothing, the advantage goes to whoever asks the better questions and builds the smarter process around it. Owning the instrument is not the same as knowing how to play it, and cheap instruments do not close that gap on their own.

~10x a year

The cost of a fixed level of AI capability has been falling by roughly 10x a year

What to do about it

Stop treating AI cost as the blocker. Focus on where it actually saves time or makes better decisions.

Pick two or three real tasks and build AI into them properly rather than dabbling everywhere.

Invest in the skill to use these tools well. That is the scarce thing now, not the tools.

Reassess your stack regularly. What was too expensive to automate last year may be cheap this year.

The models keep getting cheaper. Your edge comes from what you do with them, not what you pay.
