Specsavers Broke Its Own Billboard on Purpose. That Is the Whole Ad.

Specsavers has run deliberately broken creative on the JCDecaux ICON at Melbourne's St Kilda Junction, the largest digital billboard in the Southern Hemisphere, with misaligned artwork and wrong days of the week building to 'Should've gone to Specsavers'. It is a masterclass in matching the idea to the channel, using the format itself as the joke.

The best 'Should've gone to Specsavers' ideas are the ones people spot for themselves.

Specsavers has put a broken advertisement on the biggest billboard in the Southern Hemisphere, and the breakage is the point. The campaign runs on the JCDecaux ICON at Melbourne's St Kilda Junction from 13 to 26 July, and every version carries a deliberate mistake.

Misaligned artwork. Incomplete logos. The wrong day of the week. Commuters spot the errors, take a second look and the punchline lands. 'Should've gone to Specsavers'. The creative was developed in-house by Specsavers Creative and sits on a brand platform the company has run for nearly 20 years.

The clever part is the medium. A broken billboard only works out of home, where a moment of discovery can play out. You notice something looks wrong, you look again, then the joke lands. That is a very different experience from being told a brand is funny.

Why it matters

This is a masterclass in matching the idea to the channel. Plenty of brands buy the biggest billboard they can and slap a pretty picture on it. Specsavers used the format itself as the joke. The scale makes the mistake unmissable, and the fact that the viewer catches it does the work no headline could. Twenty years in, the platform still generates fresh ideas because the core thought, get your eyes checked, is elastic.

What to do about it

Use the format, do not just fill it. The best out-of-home ideas could only exist out of home. If yours would work as a social post, you wasted the billboard.

Make the audience do the work. An ad the viewer completes in their own head sticks harder than one that spells everything out.

Protect the platform. A single idea that stretches for two decades is worth more than a new tagline every year.

Match the risk to the brand. A deliberate mistake only works because Specsavers has the equity to be in on the joke. Earn that before you try it.

The strongest brand ideas are simple enough to last twenty years and flexible enough to feel new each time. Specsavers just proved it again by getting it wrong on purpose.
