Australia Is Drafting an Off Switch for the Social Media Algorithm

Draft federal laws would force Meta, TikTok and Google to let Australians switch off the algorithm and see only accounts they follow. If a slice of the audience flips the switch, borrowed reach shrinks and owned audience gets more valuable.

The Take: The federal government wants to force Meta, TikTok and Google to let Australians turn the algorithm off and see only the accounts they follow. If even a slice of the audience flips that switch, the reach you have been renting from the feed shrinks. The followers you actually own get more valuable overnight.

On the ground: Draft laws introduced this week would make platforms show a pop-up offering a choice between an algorithmic feed and a chronological one limited to followed accounts, the ABC reported. It sits inside a broader Digital Duty of Care, with Communications Minister Anika Wells warning of substantial penalties for platforms that refuse. The mechanism that quietly carries most brand content to people who never followed the brand is the exact mechanism a user could now switch off.

The stakes: Around 21 million social media accounts sit in Australia, and today the algorithm decides who sees what. A chronological feed rewards accounts a person deliberately followed and starves posts that only travelled because the machine pushed them. Borrowed reach gets rarer. Owned reach gets sharper.

Second order: The open question is how many people actually opt out. Most will not, so this is not the end of algorithmic distribution, as one expert argued in The Conversation. Even a minority switching changes the maths on how much of your audience you can reach for free, and it hands platforms selling paid reach more pricing power to make up the difference. The businesses least exposed are the ones with an audience they can contact directly.

For Australian operators: Grow the audience you own, the email list and the deliberate follow, because that is the audience a chronological feed still reaches. Assume a share of your organic reach moves off the algorithm and plan content your followers actively want, not content built to game distribution. Watch the opt-out rates once the law lands and treat them as a signal about how much free reach is left. Do not build next year's plan on borrowed reach alone.
