Google Is Selling Ads Inside Its AI Answers. Buying One Won't Get You Cited.

A study of 50,032 keywords found Google AI Mode now shows ads on nearly a third of commercial searches. But the ad slot and the citations are separate systems. Paying for placement does not buy you a mention in the answer.

Buying the slot does not buy you the mention. Placement, citations and organic rankings are drifting apart, and Google is happy to charge you for one of the three.

Google has started selling ad slots inside its AI answers, and a new study shows how far it has gone. An analysis of 50,032 commercial keywords found ads appearing in nearly a third of AI Mode responses. In 71.1% of those, the answer carried two ad items. This is not a test anymore. Google is building formats to sell.

Here is the part that matters. The ads and the citations are two separate systems. In 88% of the keywords where an ad appeared, the advertiser's own domain was nowhere in the sources the AI Mode answer cited. You can pay to sit inside the answer and still not be the brand the machine recommends.

Placement is driven by CPC. The higher the commercial intent, the more likely an ad shows. That means your most valuable keywords, the ones with buyers attached, are exactly where Google is inserting a paid layer between the question and your answer.

Why it matters

For Australian advertisers this is a new paid channel dressed up as search. It looks like search and it sits in the same box, but the rules are different. Treating AI Mode ads like standard Search ads, or assuming a strong organic position protects you, is how you end up paying for the click while a competitor gets named as the recommendation.

What to do about it

Treat AI Mode ads as a separate line, not an extension of your Search campaigns. Measure them on their own.
Watch your high-CPC commercial keywords first. That is where the paid layer is densest.
Do not assume a paid slot earns you a citation. Work your content and entity signals to get cited, and buy the slot only where the maths stands up.
Check whether you are being cited at all in AI answers for your money terms. If you are not, that is a bigger problem than your ad position.

The search box is quietly splitting into three markets that used to be one. Know which one you are actually winning.
