Google's AI Answers Now Fill 43% of Searches. The Click Is Disappearing.

New data shows Google's AI Overviews now appear in 43% of searches, up from 15% a year ago. When AI Mode is active, 93% of searches end with no click. The traffic deal that rewarded ranking first is breaking, and businesses that treated Google as a free tap are about to feel it.

The search box you optimised for is turning into an answer box that quotes you and keeps the visitor.

Google's AI answers now show up in 43% of searches. A year ago it was 15%. That is not a trial anymore. That is the default.

New data reported by TechCrunch shows AI Overviews appearing on 43% of Google searches, up from 15% twelve months ago. AI Mode, the more conversational layer users drop into from an Overview, went from 126 million visits in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026. The search box you built your traffic strategy around is being replaced by an answer box.

The number that should stop you cold is the click. 43% of all Google searches now end without a click to any external site. Switch on AI Mode and that figure jumps to 93%. People are getting their answer and leaving. Your blue link never gets seen.

Why it matters

For years the deal was simple. Rank well, earn the click, get the visit. That deal is breaking. If nine in ten AI Mode searches end without a click, ranking first is worth a fraction of what it used to be. The businesses that treated Google as a free tap of traffic are about to feel it in the revenue line, and most will not see it coming because they are not watching the right numbers.

This is not the death of search. It is a shift in what search rewards. Being the source the AI quotes is the new front page. Getting mentioned in the answer matters more than owning the tenth blue link nobody clicks.

What to do about it

Track your AI visibility, not just your rankings. Check whether your brand and pages get cited inside AI Overviews and AI Mode for the queries that matter to you.
Stop measuring success by impressions. Measure it by the questions where you are the named source, because that is what earns the click that still exists.
Build content that answers the question cleanly and completely. Vague padded pages do not get quoted. Direct, specific, sourced pages do.
Protect the traffic you can still own. Email, direct, referral and brand search do not run through the answer box. Feed them.
Watch your organic revenue by query type, not total sessions. The average hides the collapse in informational traffic and the resilience of commercial traffic.

The click is not gone. It is just rarer, and it goes to whoever the machine decides to name. Earn the mention.
