Google Launches Universal Commerce Protocol for AI Shopping

What changed

Google introduced Direct Offers in AI Mode and launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)
US shoppers can now buy items from Etsy and Wayfair directly inside Google AI Mode
Shopify, Target and Walmart integrations coming soon

What it means

Google is building a buy-now layer inside AI search. When a user asks "best standing desk under $800," Google's AI will show products they can purchase without leaving the search experience. This compresses the entire funnel into a single interaction. For ecommerce businesses, product feed quality and structured data become even more critical than traditional SEO.

What to do

Make sure your Google Merchant Centre feed is clean, complete and updated daily.
Add structured product data (schema.org/Product) to every product page.
If you're on Shopify, watch for the UCP integration rollout.
For AU businesses, this is likely 6-12 months away, but feed quality improvements pay off immediately in Shopping ads and organic product results.
