AI is shaping demand faster than brands can measure it, with only 12% of marketers running GEO or AEO able to point to a result. Optimising for AI visibility you cannot attribute is faith, not strategy.
The Take: AI is now shaping demand faster than anyone can measure it, and most brands have responded by optimising harder for a channel they cannot attribute. Spending on AI visibility you cannot prove is not a strategy. It is faith with a media budget attached.
The numbers: Search Engine Journal reports that AI's impact outran measurement across the first half of 2026, and the gap is not expected to close this year. Kevin Indig's AI Halftime Report found 91% of AI citations appear on just one platform, so single-engine rank tracking leaves most of the picture dark. Meanwhile 54% of marketers now prioritise GEO or AEO optimisation, but only 12% report a measurable result.
The catch: Getting cited is not the same as being represented accurately. 27% of brands say they have already been misrepresented in an AI-generated response, and only 20% of organisations always disclose their own AI use, against 84% of consumers who want that labelling. The trust deficit runs in both directions at once.

What to watch: Consumer behaviour is not waiting for the measurement to catch up. In Australia, 12% of people now name AI tools as their main way to find information online, up from 5% a year earlier, and about 64% have already seen an AI Overview above Google's results. Stop and read that adoption curve. The channel is compounding while the instruments to read it lag a full year behind.
For Australian operators: Treat AI visibility as a real channel with real gaps, not a magic box. Track citations across more than one engine, because a single-platform view either flatters you or blinds you. Audit how AI systems describe your business the way you would audit a review site, and correct the source material they read from. Set one honest attribution question before you spend another dollar on GEO or AEO: if this works, how will I know it worked? If you cannot answer that, you are buying visibility on trust alone.
