Meta has launched Muse Image, its first image generation model, built directly into its ad tools. It lowers production cost for small businesses, but hands more of the workflow to the platform and risks your creative blending into everyone else's feed.
When the ad platform makes your images too, convenience and dependence start to look like the same thing.
Meta has launched Muse Image, its first image generation model out of the new Superintelligence Labs. It sits inside Meta's advertising tools, which means the platform where a huge share of small business media spend already goes now has its own native creative engine built in.
The model arrived in early July. For advertisers it means image generation without leaving the ad build, without a third-party subscription and without moving files between tools. The creative and the media buy live in the same place, and Meta gets to keep you inside its walls a little longer.
Why it matters
For Australian small businesses with no design resource, a native image generator lowers the cost of getting an ad live. That is real. The trade is that everyone else running Meta ads has the same tool, so the baseline of "good enough" creative rises and standing out gets harder, not easier.
There is a quieter risk. The more of your creative you hand to the platform's own model, the less distinct your brand looks and the more your output blends into everyone else's feed. Cheap and fast is useful. Same as everyone is not a position you want to be in when attention is the scarce thing.
It also concentrates more of the workflow inside Meta. Your targeting, your buying, your measurement and now your creative all sit with the same company that decides what your ads cost. That is convenient right up until it is not.
Meta has more than 10 million active advertisers who now get a native image generation model inside the ad tools
What to do about it
Use Muse Image for volume and testing, not as your only source of brand creative.
Feed it your real brand assets and colours so the output does not default to generic.
Keep a layer of human art direction on anything that carries the brand.
Test AI-generated creative against your best human-made work before you scale spend behind it.
Keep your creative files and best performers stored outside the platform so you are not locked in.
The tool makes production cheap. Making it look like you is still your job.
