Google says its AI Search features send billions of clicks to websites every week, but the company publishes no data to back the claim. Independent studies show AI summaries cutting click-through rates hard. Trust your own analytics, not the press release.
Google is grading its own homework and asking you to take the mark on faith. Your analytics are the only report card that counts.
Google's Nick Fox said the company is now sending billions of clicks to websites every week through AI features in Search alone. That is the headline. Here is the problem. Neither the figure nor any earlier baseline can be checked. Google's generative AI performance reports do not include click data, so no website owner can verify the claim against their own traffic.
A claim you cannot check is not a number. It is a mood. And the mood is set by the one party with every reason to keep you calm while AI Overviews keep the click on the results page.
Independent research tells a different story. Pew and others have measured AI summaries cutting click-through rates sharply, with some studies showing organic clicks dropping by around 38% when an AI Overview is present. SparkToro's 2026 analysis found less than a third of Google searches still send a click to the open web at all.
Why it matters
Australian businesses that built their model on rented Google traffic are the most exposed here. If a single feature can quietly halve the clicks reaching your site, an aggregate reassurance from Google does nothing to protect you. The businesses bleeding out are the ones watching a vendor's dashboard instead of their own. The ones that win know their own numbers, channel by channel, and they can tell you exactly what AI Overviews did to their organic traffic because they went and looked.

What to do about it
Pull your own Search Console data. Compare impressions to clicks over the last year and find where the gap widened.
Segment by query type. Informational queries are getting swallowed by AI Overviews fastest. Commercial and branded queries hold up better.
Stop treating organic traffic as free and infinite. If your business needs it to survive, that is a dependency, not a strategy.
Build the surfaces you own. Email, direct, community and repeat customers do not evaporate when Google changes a feature.
When a platform tells you everything is fine but will not show the data, believe your own dashboard over the press release.
