The Non-Human Web Is Here. Nobody Builds the Page. Nobody Visits It.

AI is now writing web pages that only AI reads. Search Engine Journal explores what happens when both sides of the web become automated.

When AI writes the page and AI reads the page, the only thing that matters is what humans cannot get anywhere else.

Search Engine Journal has published a piece that names something marketers have been sensing for months: the emergence of a fully non-human web, where AI generates the content and AI consumes it.

The premise is straightforward. AI tools are producing web pages at industrial scale. AI agents, crawlers and summarisers are reading those pages instead of humans. The result is a growing portion of the internet where no person builds the page and no person visits it.

Why it matters

This is not a theoretical future. It is happening now. AI-generated product descriptions, SEO landing pages, programmatic content farms and auto-generated news summaries are already filling search indexes. On the consumption side, AI Overviews, ChatGPT browsing, Perplexity and enterprise AI agents are increasingly the first reader of a web page, extracting the information and delivering it to humans in a different format.

For marketers, this creates a measurement problem and a strategy problem at the same time.

The measurement problem: your analytics show traffic, but an increasing share of that traffic is bots and AI crawlers. Real human engagement may be lower than your dashboards suggest.

The strategy problem: if AI is both writing and reading the web, the competitive advantage shifts to whoever creates content that AI cannot easily replicate or summarise away. Original research, proprietary data, genuine expertise and human perspective become the moat.

What to do about it

Audit your content for originality. If your pages could be generated by any AI tool with access to the same public information, they are vulnerable. Invest in proprietary data, original analysis, customer stories and expert commentary. These are the signals that both search engines and AI agents reward because they cannot be manufactured at scale.
