Omnicom Is Merging Two Agencies Into One. Read That as a Signal.

Omnicom is combining Mediahub and Hearts & Science into a single global network spanning 40 markets and roughly US$9.1 billion in billings, launching next month with a new name. Australia stays separate for now. It is consolidation, and it tells advertisers that scale is now beating specialisation.

When holding companies merge their own agencies, they are telling you scale now beats specialisation.

Omnicom is folding two of its media agencies into one. Mediahub and Hearts & Science are merging into a single global network, and the move says a lot about where the agency world is heading.

The combined network will span 40 markets and oversee roughly US$9.1 billion in annual billings, launching next month under a new name and brand. Hearts & Science was built on data, analytics and audience planning. Mediahub made its name as a challenger with a focus on culturally-led media. Omnicom is bringing them under one roof as it digests its acquisition of Interpublic Group. Notably, both agencies keep operating separately in Australia for now.

This is consolidation, plain and simple. Fewer, bigger agencies. The holding company is simplifying its go-to-market and stripping out duplication.

Why it matters

The agency model is under pressure from two sides. AI is compressing the cost of the work, and clients are asking harder questions about what they actually pay for. Merging networks is how the holding companies answer. For advertisers it means a bigger, more powerful counterparty and fewer independent options. Bigger is not always better for the client. Scale can mean leverage and reach, or it can mean you are one small account inside a very noisy building.

What to do about it

Know what you are actually buying from your agency. If you cannot name the value, a merger is a good prompt to find out.
Watch for service drift. Consolidation can mean your day-to-day team changes while the logo stays the same.
Ask where you sit in the account hierarchy. A small brand in a giant network can get lost.
Keep your own data and measurement in-house. Do not let the agency own the scoreboard it is graded on.
Judge the relationship on outcomes, not size. The biggest network is not automatically the best fit.

Consolidation up top does not change the only question that matters. Is the money you hand your agency coming back as growth. Keep asking it.
