Australia's A$60 Billion AI Build Comes for the Design Desk First

Oxford Economics forecasts Australian data centre investment reaching A$60 billion by 2030 as AI adoption climbs. The same research names graphic design, web design and illustration as the most automatable jobs in the country, which is a direct message to marketing teams about where the cost pressure lands.

The Take: Australia's data centre buildout is being sold to you as jobs and productivity, and the headline number is real. The part the announcement skips is which work AI automates first, and the same forecast says it is graphic design, web design and illustration. That is not a distant risk to some other industry. That is your content supply chain.

The forecast: Oxford Economics told a Sydney conference that Australian data centre investment will reach A$60 billion by 2030, up from A$20 billion this year. The same team expects AI adoption across Australian firms to climb toward 50% over the next decade. It also put a figure on the human cost. Oxford Economics named graphic design, web design and illustration as the occupations most exposed to automation, ahead of data entry and telemarketing.

The real target: A generation of marketing teams treated design and production as the cheap, fast, endlessly available part of the operation. That is exactly the part the models do well now. If your content engine runs on junior designers turning out endless variations, the forecast is telling you the cost base you built is the one under most pressure.

The redeploy: The lazy reading is to cut the design line and bank the saving. The better one is to move that capacity up the value chain. Let the models handle volume production. Put your people on the judgment they cannot do, the strategy and taste and brand calls that decide which idea is worth making at all. Oxford Economics still expects the buildout to add 80,000 to 100,000 jobs a year and lift national productivity, so the upside is real for teams that redeploy rather than simply shrink.

For Australian operators: Audit where your content actually comes from before the tools decide for you. Separate the work that is genuine production, the resizing and versioning and formatting, from the work that is judgment. Move budget and headcount toward the second. Treat AI as the new floor for production speed, not as a reason to gut the team, because the businesses that win the next decade will be the ones that pointed freed-up people at better thinking.
