Quick definition
ChatGPT is an AI chat assistant made by OpenAI, built on a large language model. You type a question or instruction in plain English and it responds with written text: an answer, a draft, a summary or an idea. For marketers it matters on two fronts. It is a fast production tool for drafts and analysis, and it is increasingly a place people go to ask the questions they used to type into Google.
Where it shows up in the data
You interact in plain language and can refine through back and forth, which makes it feel like reasoning even though it is predicting text.
Its most common marketing use: drafts, rewrites, summaries and analysis done in seconds, freeing time for judgement and strategy.
People increasingly ask ChatGPT the questions they used to search. Being the source it draws on is the new version of ranking.
What it actually means
ChatGPT is a conversational interface on top of a large language model. It predicts helpful text in response to your prompt, and it can hold a back and forth so you refine as you go. For marketing teams it does two jobs. First, it accelerates production: first drafts, rewrites, summaries, brainstorming and quick analysis. Second, and more strategically, it is becoming a discovery channel. People ask ChatGPT for recommendations, comparisons and how-to answers, and it responds with a synthesised answer rather than a list of links. That shifts the marketing goal from ranking a page to being the trusted source the model reaches for. It also has real limits. It can state false things confidently, its knowledge has a cutoff and it does not understand your business, so anything it produces needs a human check.
ChatGPT did not just give marketers a faster writer. It gave your customers a new front door that does not show ten blue links.

Common questions
What is ChatGPT?
It is an AI chat assistant from OpenAI, built on a large language model. You ask it something in plain English and it responds with written text such as an answer, a draft or a summary.
How do marketers use ChatGPT?
Two ways. As a production tool for drafts, rewrites, summaries and analysis, and as a discovery channel, because customers increasingly ask it the questions they used to type into a search engine.
Can I trust ChatGPT's answers?
Not without checking. It predicts likely-sounding text rather than retrieving verified facts, so it can state false things confidently. Use it for drafts and ideas, then verify anything factual.
