Link Sculpting
SEOAlso: PageRank Sculpting · Link Equity Sculpting
Quick definition
Link sculpting is the practice of deliberately directing internal link equity toward the pages you most want to rank. It started as a technique using the nofollow attribute to block PageRank flow to low-value pages, pushing more weight toward priority ones instead.
How it varies across Australia
Sites with deliberate internal linking structures tend to show stronger crawl efficiency and faster indexing of new pages than sites relying on flat or accidental architecture. The gap shows up most on larger Australian sites with hundreds of pages competing for the same crawl budget.

Picture your website as a river system. Link equity is the water. Every internal link is a channel deciding where that water flows. Link sculpting is the act of digging channels toward the fields you want to grow and away from the ones that don't matter.
The original version of this, popular in the mid-2000s, used the nofollow attribute on links pointing to pages like your privacy policy or login screen. The idea was to stop PageRank leaking into pages that would never rank for anything, and keep more of it flowing to money pages.
Google closed that loophole years ago. Nofollowed links still count as links for crawl purposes, they just don't pass the same signal, and the equity that would have flowed through them doesn't get redistributed elsewhere on the page. Sculpting with nofollow tags now mostly just wastes link equity rather than redirecting it.
What survived is the underlying instinct. Good site architecture, deliberate internal linking, and sensible anchor text still steer crawlers and users toward your priority pages. It's the same goal as old-school link sculpting, achieved through structure instead of a technical trick.
Link sculpting died as a nofollow trick and was reborn as good site architecture. Same goal, honest method.
How it shows up
You'll see the effects of link sculpting in crawl stats and indexing speed rather than in any single dashboard metric. Priority pages that sit within a couple of clicks of the homepage, with several contextual internal links pointing to them, tend to get crawled more often and rank faster after changes. Pages buried five or six clicks deep with no internal links pointing in often sit unindexed or stagnant regardless of the content quality.
The Australian context
Australian sites often carry link equity into pages that add little value, like state-specific landing pages built for local search coverage. Sculpting these properly, linking between them and up to category pages rather than leaving them orphaned, matters more here than in flatter single-market sites because the page count grows faster relative to overall authority.

Common questions
Does link sculpting still work in Google's current algorithm?
The nofollow version doesn't work the way it used to. Google now treats nofollow as a hint rather than a hard block, and equity blocked this way tends to be lost rather than redistributed. What still works is achieving the same goal through deliberate site architecture and internal linking.
Is link sculpting the same as internal linking?
No. Internal linking is the broad practice of connecting pages on your site. Link sculpting is the narrower goal of directing link equity toward specific priority pages, which is usually achieved through internal linking done deliberately rather than by accident.
Should I nofollow my privacy policy or terms page?
There's little upside left. Nofollowing these pages doesn't meaningfully redirect equity anymore, and the pages will still get crawled. Better to focus effort on strengthening internal links toward the pages you actually want to rank.
How do I sculpt links toward a new priority page?
Add contextual links from relevant existing pages, especially ones with strong internal link counts of their own, and place the new page as close to the homepage in your site structure as makes sense. Avoid orphaning it with no internal links pointing in.
