Google Search Console

Quick definition
Google Search Console (GSC) is a free tool from Google that shows how your website performs in search results. It reports which pages are indexed, which search queries bring traffic, and which technical issues (broken pages, slow loading, mobile problems) are stopping pages from ranking.
How it varies across Australia
Most Australian small business sites we review have never had their Search Console coverage report checked. The gap between sites that monitor it weekly and sites that ignore it shows up clearly in organic traffic trends over time.

Google Search Console is the closest thing marketers get to a direct line into how Google actually reads a website. It doesn't tell you about revenue or behaviour on the page, that's what Google Analytics (GA4) is for. It tells you whether Google can find your pages, whether it has indexed them, and what search queries are actually triggering an impression or a click.
The most useful reports sit in three places. The Performance report shows real search queries, impressions, clicks and average position, which is the closest thing to unfiltered keyword data available for free. The Coverage report flags pages Google can't or won't index, often the first sign of a technical SEO problem. The Core Web Vitals report ties directly into page experience signals.
Most businesses install it once during a website build and never open it again. That's the missed opportunity. Search Console is where crawl errors, sitemap problems and manual penalties surface first, often weeks before the traffic drop shows up anywhere else. Treating it as a diagnostic tool rather than a dashboard is what separates teams who catch problems early from teams who find out from a client asking why their site vanished.
How it shows up
Search Console shows up whenever someone asks why a page isn't ranking despite good content. It's the first place to check whether the page is even indexed before debating keyword strategy. It also shows up in technical audits, where the Coverage and Sitemaps reports reveal crawl errors invisible in any other tool, and in Core Web Vitals reviews, where the field data feeds straight from the same Google systems used for ranking.

Common questions
Is Google Search Console free?
Yes. Search Console is completely free for any website owner who can verify ownership of the site. There's no paid tier or usage limit, which makes it one of the highest-value tools available for technical SEO monitoring.
How is Search Console different from Google Analytics?
Search Console shows how Google finds and ranks your site before a click happens. Google Analytics shows what visitors do after they land on your site. Together they cover the full journey from search result to conversion.
Why isn't my page showing up in Search Console?
New pages can take days to weeks to appear. Check the Coverage report for indexing errors, confirm the page isn't blocked by robots.txt, and submit the sitemap if you haven't already. Persistent absence usually points to a crawl or quality issue.
How often should I check Search Console?
Weekly for the Coverage and Core Web Vitals reports on active sites, monthly at minimum for smaller sites. Set up email alerts for manual actions and security issues so problems surface immediately rather than during a scheduled check.
