Quick definition

Chrome UX Report (CrUX) is Google's public dataset of real-world page performance, collected anonymously from actual Chrome users who opt in. It's the source Google uses for Core Web Vitals ranking signals, as opposed to lab tests run on a single machine under test conditions.

What it actually means

Think of a lab speed test like a car being tested on a closed track. Controlled conditions, no traffic, ideal weather. Chrome UX Report is the same car being driven by thousands of ordinary people on ordinary roads, in traffic, in the rain, on a phone with three other tabs open.

Google collects this field data from Chrome users who've opted in to share usage statistics. It aggregates loading speed, responsiveness and layout stability across real sessions on your site, then publishes it as a dataset. Tools like PageSpeed Insights and Search Console pull from this dataset to show you the 'field data' version of your Core Web Vitals scores, sitting alongside the 'lab data' from a single simulated run.

The distinction matters because CrUX is what actually feeds into search rankings. A page can score perfectly in a lab test on a fast office connection and still fail in CrUX because most of your real visitors are on patchy mobile data. Attribution of ranking impact often gets confused here too. It's not your PageSpeed score that ranks you. It's the CrUX data behind it.

Your lab test tells you what could happen. CrUX tells you what actually happened to real people on real connections.

How it shows up

CrUX shows up as the 'field data' section in Google's PageSpeed Insights report and in the Core Web Vitals report inside Search Console. If a URL doesn't have enough real Chrome traffic, Google won't show CrUX data for it at all and will fall back to origin-level aggregates or lab-only figures. Low-traffic pages often have no CrUX data, which is itself a signal worth noticing.

The Australian context

Australian sites hosted on servers or content delivery networks based overseas often show a wider gap between their lab scores and their CrUX field data than sites hosted closer to Australian visitors. The lab test doesn't account for the extra distance the data has to travel. If your CrUX numbers are consistently worse than your lab numbers and your audience is mostly Australian, hosting location is the first thing to check.

No. Google Analytics tracks visitor behaviour on your specific site through a tracking script you install. Chrome UX Report is a separate anonymous dataset of performance metrics collected from Chrome users across the web, with no tracking script required on your end.

Why doesn't my page show any CrUX data?

CrUX only reports on pages with enough real Chrome traffic to form a reliable sample. Low-traffic pages often show no field data at all. Google will sometimes fall back to origin-level data covering your whole site instead.

Can I access raw Chrome UX Report data myself?
