Quick definition

Ahrefs is a paid SEO software platform used for keyword research, backlink analysis, competitor research and rank tracking. It crawls the web independently and builds its own index, which lets marketers see which pages rank, who links to them and which keywords drive their traffic.

What it actually means

Ahrefs is one of a handful of tools that crawls the web on its own schedule and builds an independent index, separate from Google's. That index is what powers its backlink checker, its keyword research tool and its competitor gap reports.

Most teams reach for Ahrefs to answer three questions. Who links to this page. What is this competitor ranking for that we aren't. And how much organic traffic does a given keyword realistically carry.

The honest limitation is that Ahrefs is not Google. Its crawler visits pages on its own timetable and its search volume figures are modelled estimates, not ground truth. Treat its numbers the way you'd treat a good forecast. Directionally reliable, not gospel.

Where it earns its subscription cost is in technical SEO audits, tracking keyword rankings over time, and finding link-building opportunities competitors have already proven work. Paired with Search Console, which shows what Google actually saw, Ahrefs becomes a genuinely useful second opinion rather than a replacement for first-party data.

Ahrefs shows you a very good estimate of the internet. It is still an estimate, not the ledger.

How it shows up

Ahrefs shows up in the workflow before content gets written, when a team is deciding what to target. It shows up again during a technical SEO audit, flagging broken links, thin pages and crawl issues. And it shows up in competitor reviews, where teams pull a rival's top pages and best-linked content to see what's working for them.

The Australian context

Ahrefs' keyword volume estimates for Australian search terms are generally thinner than for US or UK terms, simply because the underlying click and search data it models from is smaller for the Australian market. Treat Australian-specific volume figures as more directional than precise, and cross-check anything decision-critical against Search Console's real query data.

Where people get this wrong

Chasing Domain Rating as if it were a ranking factor.Domain Rating is Ahrefs' own scoring metric, not a signal Google uses. It's a useful proxy for link authority but it doesn't directly move rankings.
Treating Ahrefs' traffic estimates as actual traffic. Its traffic numbers are modelled from ranking positions and estimated click-through rates. Search Console and analytics show what actually happened. Ahrefs shows a plausible guess.
Using it as the only source for keyword decisions.Search volume tools model demand differently and disagree with each other regularly. Cross-referencing with Search Console query data catches gaps a single tool will miss.

Common questions

Is Ahrefs worth paying for?

For anyone doing serious SEO work, its backlink index and rank tracking are genuinely strong. For a small business publishing a handful of pages a year, the free tools in Search Console cover most of what you need.

Is Ahrefs the same as Google Search Console?

No. Search Console shows what Google actually saw and how your site actually performed in search. Ahrefs is an independent third-party crawler with its own index, used mainly for research and competitor analysis rather than reporting on your own confirmed performance.

How accurate is Ahrefs' search volume data?

It's a modelled estimate, not exact. It's directionally useful for comparing keywords against each other but shouldn't be treated as a precise forecast, especially for smaller markets like Australia where the underlying data sample is thinner.

Should I use Ahrefs or Semrush?

Ahrefs generally has the stronger backlink index and is favoured by technical SEO specialists. Semrush offers a wider all-in-one suite covering content, paid media and SEO. Many larger teams end up running both for different jobs.
