400,000 Apps and One Tap: TikTok Turns Its Feed Into a Checkout

TikTok opened its 400,000-app ad network to advertisers and added one-click Buy Direct checkout and an AI shopping assistant, engineering the friction out of buying. With 10.9 million Australian adults on the platform but still no domestic TikTok Shop, Australian brands get the demand without a local checkout to capture it. The brief covers what Australian operators should do now.

The Take: TikTok just shipped the buying, not the watching. It opened its 400,000-app ad network to advertisers, added a one-click checkout called Buy Direct and a conversational shopping assistant, and pointed the whole thing at purchase. This is not a reach story. It is a checkout story, and Australian brands are being handed the demand without the local till to capture it.

The local angle: TikTok is the most-used social app in the country, with 10.9 million Australian adults on the platform, 51.2% of the over-18 population. Yet there is still no domestic TikTok Shop here, so Australian sellers can only trade outbound into the United States, United Kingdom and Singapore. The agentic buying tools land on an audience Australian operators can reach but cannot yet sell to at a local checkout.

The catch: The new tools are built to remove the gap between wanting and buying. TikTok opened its network of nearly 400,000 apps and launched Buy Direct, a single-click in-app checkout with Shopify, Stripe and Salesforce, plus an AI shopping assistant that answers sizing and shipping questions inside the feed. Advertiser use of its agent connections rose more than 200% between July and September 2026. The friction that protected considered purchases is being engineered out.

What to watch: When the buying decision collapses into one tap, the brand with the cleanest product data and the clearest proof wins the assistant's recommendation. The ones relying on a slow website and a separate checkout lose the sale in the gap.

For Australian operators: Treat TikTok as a demand engine that points somewhere else for now. Make sure your product feed, reviews and shipping facts are clean and machine-readable, because the shopping assistant will read them whether you optimise for it or not. If you already sell outbound through TikTok Shop into the US or UK, test Buy Direct there and measure incremental orders against a holdout rather than platform-reported clicks. Watch for a domestic Australian launch too, because the day a local checkout arrives, the operators with their data in order will convert the audience they have spent two years building.
