The Cheapest Attention This Summer Is In Regional Australia, If The Number Holds

Boomtown says nearly 2.5 million Australians plan a regional holiday this summer, with strong local spending intent. It is a stated-intention survey run by the people who sell regional media, so the opportunity is real but the measurement is theirs to prove.

The Take: Boomtown wants you to shift budget into regional Australia this summer, and it has a big number ready to help. The number is a survey of stated intentions, run by the people who sell regional media. The opportunity is real. The measurement is theirs, so weigh it accordingly.

The claim: Boomtown says nearly 2.5 million Australians plan to holiday in regional areas this summer, about 1.7 million travelling from the cities and 860,000 regional locals staying close to home. The companion SCAiQ survey of more than 1,700 Australians found 83% intend to spend at local cafes and restaurants and 55% at local shops. The top draws by share of travellers were regional New South Wales and the ACT on 17%, regional Queensland on 14% and regional Victoria on 10%.

The history: This study lands every spring. Boomtown, the collective representing the nearly 10 million people who live in regional Australia, runs a summer-travel read each year to move travel and retail money off the capital cities. The pattern it describes is not wrong. It is annual, and it is interested in one answer.

The read: Regional attention is genuinely underpriced when city auctions are crowded and the audience is physically present with cash to spend. Regional media also tends to carry less competition for the same set of eyeballs, which is the part worth testing for yourself. The limitation is that a survey of 1,700 people projected up to 2.5 million travellers is a planning signal, not a promise of foot traffic through any one door. Intentions in August are not receipts in January.

Australians Boomtown expects to holiday regional this summer, on stated intent

For Australian operators: If you sell travel, food or retail, regional audiences earn a real line in the summer plan rather than the leftovers. Treat the 2.5 million figure as a reason to run a controlled test, not a media buy to sign off on faith. Set the measure before you spend, whether that is bookings, in-store visits or local search lift, so you can tell signal from story by autumn. Ask Boomtown for outcomes from last summer, not only an intention survey. Match the channel to the trip, because regional radio, outdoor and local press reach people once they have put the feed down.
